I think listening to this as an audiobook was a mistake, but oh well. I couldn't keep my focus on this and I probably missed a bunch of random details. LIke the fact that Finch is a POC AND IT TOOK ME WAY TOO LONG TO REALIZE IT.

Alice as a main character is okay. She gets really angry, like mood, but she never really apologizes for it and that's not okay. Finch brings up an amazing point of racism and police brutality at one point and Alice completely dismisses him because he is RICH. Also, she h ...more

Glad I decided to give this one a shot on audio, as it wasn't enough fantasy to confuse me. I think I did get a little lost at points though, so I didn't get the full impact of the story, but that's just what I get from an audio. This was such a dark almost urban fantasy, and I loved the whole premise of grimdark fairy stories making their way into the real world. The twists regarding a few major characters also threw me. I loved this story so much!! There is fantastically creepy magic and good writing. I was sucked in pretty much immediately and I just can't get enough of The Hinterland. This reads fast and easy, but feels super complex and heavy in the best of ways. The world building is sly and super, with magical pieces dripping in here and there through the pages. Such a cool premise for a story! It was slow at first and I felt like nothing really happened until halfway through, but I ended up loving the story. As soon as the got to the Hinterland I was majorly hooked!

I thought it was wonderful! It did drag in places, and I was eager to get to the next stop.

It is not a retelling of Alice in Wonderland. I feel like that is an oversimplification. I might have really related to it because anger issues and memories are something I struggle with on the regular. The writing was wonderful, the characters (unpopular opinion) were likable and hateable. Something I think a good character should be. 3.5 stars is a bit closer to how I really feel about this book. It was all over the place constantly. It was a almost dead in some chapters and straight chaos in others. Oddly enough, it wasn’t horrible. Just weird.
