Here's the thing; Sarah J. Maas is undoubtedly my favourite author (because of Heir of Fire). So I was expecting to ~~like~~ love this book. Yet I left conflicted and disappointed and intrigued...

The Good:

Sarah J. Maas' writing is amazing, she made me care for characters that I felt no connection to, for the last 30% percent of this book I was a whirlwind of emotions. This was the part that packed lots of plot, and I just wish that the rest of the book was as good as that 30%.

A Court of Thorns and Roses is a Beauty and the Beast retelling about a girl named Feyre who kills a faerie almost without knowledge and finds out that she'll have to face the consequences of her crime.

I enjoyed reading this book. I think my favourite part of the book was the little twist in the end. I mean, we all know the story of Beauty and the Beast, but Sarah J Maas' take on this was what I thought to be amazing. I cannot believe it took me this long to read this book. It was mind blowing, it was fantastic, I loved every aspect of this book. First, Feyre is the heroine we need, if not the heroine we deserve. I loved her hardness and her softness, the fact that she was a huntress out of necessity, but not cruel. She felt deeply for her sisters, for Tamlin, and even in the end, she was able to understand the female that tortured her. She feels deeply for the choices she's made to protect and to bring back I cannot believe it took me this long to read this book. It was mind blowing, it was fantastic, I loved every aspect of this book. First, Feyre is the heroine we need, if not the heroine we deserve. I loved her hardness and her softness, the fact that she was a huntress out of necessity, but not cruel. She felt deeply for her sisters, for Tamlin, and even in the end, she was able to understand the female that tortured her. She feels deeply for the choices she's made to protect and to bring back the people that she loves. The dialogue was excellent. It had a nice flow, it was snarky and real and had emotion, it wasn't bland. I loved that every character had personality, whether or not you liked them was a different story, but there was personality there. Every character had defining features, not just cardboard cut outs. I could emphasize with these characters, especially with Feyre. Her toughness was born out of survival, but it didn't wipe away her emotions, it didn't make her masculine or stoic, it made her tough. But she also grew, she grew to be less gruff and more kind, her sense of humor was allowed to blossom. She has flaws, she has doubts, she has a realness to her that is missing in so many other female, fantasy characters. Tamlin...is interesting. I like him but don't like him, there is something uneasy about him. Lucien is a product, too, of his trials and his hurts. Even Rhysand seems like a deeper character than what was first presented to us. I have to say that it was refreshing to finally read a deeply scarred female character, who's trauma did not originate from something sexual. Yes, it was a real concern for her at one point with Rhys, but...he never did. He never abused her in that way. She was a real person, with real traumas and hurts that are perfectly reasonable for a human to feel deeply over that was NOT rooted in anything sexual. It gave Feyre a greater depth that I loved to see evolve so. Excellent read, very well paced. I cannot recommend this enough. ...more

Well, here is another case of "a lot of people loved except for me" syndrome. I was SO excited to read it after seeing the summary and all the glowing reviews. Okay I admit that I had high hopes for it but they started getting dashed as soon as I stated reading the book. Its very easy for me to "vibe" a certain book right away. Best book I've read all year, hands down. Even more than End of Days, if I can bear to say it!

I'm stuck in a whirlwind of feels right now, so I'll have to do a proper review later.

Also, I haven't allied fully with Team Tamlin or Team Rhysand yet, they're both so different it's hard to choose. ...more
