I initially bought the Welcome to Paradise series based on the cover of this first book, promising surfing, Hawaii, and romance. The book definitely lived up to my expectations, and I was glad I bought the next two books at the same time, so I could continue reading.

The book starts when Mallory Wray arrives in Hawaii to spend the summer with her friend Sunny. At the airport she sees a couple saying their goodbyes, with the girl clearly more torn up about it than the guy, who actually has the aud I initially bought the Welcome to Paradise series based on the cover of this first book, promising surfing, Hawaii, and romance. The book starts when Mallory Wray arrives in Hawaii to spend the summer with her friend Sunny. At the airport she sees a couple saying their goodbyes, with the girl clearly more torn up about it than the guy, who actually has the audacity to flirt with her over the girl’s shoulder. Labelling him a jerk, Mallory goes to wait for Sunny to pick her up.
Unfortunately, Sunny is faced with an emergency and unable to meet her, so she decides to take a taxi. While waiting outside, the jerk from before offers her a ride. Torn between her first impression of him and the nice gesture, Mallory eventually accepts the offer.

Evan Ashford is a cocky rich kid who works as a surf instructor at a resort. He has no qualms using his good looks to get what he wants, including girls. He doesn’t do relationships and makes this clear to any girl upfront. This explanation helps in softening Mallory’s first impression of him, though she still thinks he’s a player.

Their attraction is undeniable, and SL Scott has a way with words that has you falling in love (or lust) right along with the characters. Things become more complicated when Mallory befriends Noah, a former friend and now rival of Evan.

At times I did think Mallory was being a bit silly in getting involved with Evan so soon after arriving to the island, but the way her reasoning is explained does make sense – she is on holiday, unattached, and Evan makes it clear from the onset what to expect. It’s not her fault emotions run deeper than that and cannot be controlled… It is definitely not chemistry that they’re lacking, although their communication skills definitely need some work at times.

Although the book has a satisfying ending and could stand on its own, there are some backgrounds that beg further clarification. I was also left wondering how the relationship between Evan and Mallory would progress after this.

All in all, a very nice start to a series about summer love and redemption. ...more
