I cringe whenever I see this billed as the “greatest war novel ever written”. Really? Of all the wars, all the aspects of those wars, and all the fictional works ever written about war or wartime? Should any work of fiction, any piece of art, any subjective creation ever be termed the greatest? Of course not.
Perhaps it is the most important novel about WWI. Or, perhaps one could call it one of the finest fictional soldier narratives ever written. Even those would be big boots to fill.
