A little predictable, but well told. The lessons in this book are so valuable that I didn't particularly mind a slower pace and a predictable end. Where is the magic in this book?
In the garden, obviously! Certainly, there are pages dedicated to the joys of weeding and planting, but as a non-gardener, I was more interested in the bigger picture. Spring mun' come! I loved all the bits about spring hiding under the gray and dead. This wonderful story was good for the soul, after (and still within) a very long horrible winter. (Going to be -4ºF tonight! And it's March!!!)

Victoria McGee, the narrator, DOES sound weirdly robotic, as many on audible.com noted. At first, anyway, but after some, it grows on you. Sometimes I listened normal speed, and sometimes 1.5x speed. She sounds much more normal at faster speed ;-).
The story, itself - perfection. Especially after this long long hard winter of arctic blasts and snow snow snow.
Three stars for the narration, not for the story. Story is five stars. Worthy of a re-read, even.

I'm afraid to review this book. Mostly because I know I won't do it justice. This book has a very special place in my heart. When I was 8, I asked Santa to bring me books. "Santa" brought me 5 hard-bound, adapted classics for children. This book was one of the bunch. I was drawn to the full color illustrations at the beginning of every chapter. I would stare at them for several minutes taking in all the detail before I read the chapter.

I previously rated this 4 stars based on my memory of reading it as a child, but actually on revisiting it as an adult I love it even more! This is the best nature writing I've ever read, how the themes of the garden coming alive was related to the development of the characters was expertly done and wasn't dumbed down for children. It was just a joy to be with these characters and I will continue to heartily recommend this classic.
