This book was a very pleasant surprise! Not that I was expecting I wouldn’t like it, I just never know with classics on must read lists. Often it is hard for me to determine what about the book gets people excited about it or what exactly made it a classic. With Death Comes for the Archbishop, it was not difficult to see the appeal at all!

I adore Willa Cather. This book which is in her more mature style is absolutely amazing. I loved the writing and the story. I think it was probably a very close call between this and The Bridge of San Luis Rey for the Pulitzer that year.

I enjoyed this book very much; it reads like a memoir. Based on the real life accomplishments of Father Jean Baptiste Lamy (Bishop jean LaTour in the novel) and Father Joseph Projectus Machebeuf, it paints a vivid picture of life in New Mexico and environs in the mid-1800s. I loved this book, which described two priests, Bishop and Vicar, of a newly formed New Mexico and surrounding as they created a new diocese (2) and reformed the Catholic church of the mid and late 1800s. The consideration for the native peoples of the area and the careful and tactful process of reforming the flawed early church are delicately described. Such beautiful imagery.

My Antonia has always been one of my favorite books, and after reading Archbishop, I am kicking myself for not reading sooner. I love New Mexico and Cather’s descriptions of the state in 1850 is out of this world. Not a huge plot, but it’s not needed...

This was a beautiful book that had me longing for time again in New Mexico. While we are in a different time period, much of the beautiful landscape is still the same, and much of the area is still steeped in the culture of the Native Americans, as well as the love of the people for the land. This was a story of two men who attended seminary together, one of who becomes an Archbishop, and the other his vicar. This was a book full of words and descriptions to be savored, and I just enjoyed immers
