The Sheltering Sky is Paul Bowles first novel and an impressive debut about a young couple trying to resolve their marital issues which get infinitely complicated during an epic voyage. It is a great (and relatively fast) read and very entertaining. But then, don't take it from me, take it from Tennessee Williams who reviewed it when in came out here. ...more

Occasionally a reading experience corresponds with your personal experience in an uncanny way. I happened to have this out from the library when I had the flu - in the middle of the summer. It was hot and I was miserable. So here we are, in the desert, the husband Port contracts a high-fever, his wife Kit travels on alone - unable to speak the language, on camel, etc. And then there was trying to navigate maze-like streets, and well, it was all just a feverish dream. There seems to be serious division on the quality of writing versus the story being told. Perhaps refer to other reviews for more details on both of these topics.

For me, the story of a jaded, entitled, young, American couple and several other odd Americans traveling around the world/Africa, has an uphill battle to catch my interest. The questionable behavior (view spoiler) accompanied by a side of classism makes a disturbing
