What Members Thought

I read this back in high school (and a few times since) and it blew my mind. The textual maturity grows as Stephen Daedalus grows and it is absolutely captivating. The scene where his knuckles are beaten in class (thank goodness we have moved beyond corporal punishment in schools for the most part!) was so real that my hands ached. You of course see Stephen Daedalus again in Stephen Hero as well as Ulysses.
A must read.

This is a Bildungsroman – that is a word I always think sounds fun but I always forget what it means. I only realized this book is one because of my followup review of it on Wikipedia for extra facts. For those who are like me and think it is a fun word but can’t always place how to use it, it is “a literary genre that focuses on the psychological and moral growth of the protagonist from youth to adulthood . . . . in which chara ...more

Well, that was a unique reading experience.

I really love the idea behind this novel, there was so much of it that was new to me when reading. It's the first novel where the character has started as a 5-year-old and finished as a 20-year-old (roughly). I really love getting to know a character and their development in-depth like that.
Stephen was mostly likeable. I liked him as a kid, he was really sweet and how he thought of women and love in such a tender and roman ...more

Knowing Ulysses is purportedly both the most difficult and best book in the English language intimidated me from pursuing anything written by James Joyce. After learning that this particular title was less linguistically avant-garde and semi-autobiographical, I gave it a go. Making it through this book proved to be both pain and pleasure. Pain, getting through some of the Irish vernacular, unreadable Latin passages, and several long paragraphs that required reading multiple times for comprehensi

I honestly don’t know how to rate this, because while I didn’t personally get anything out of it, I appreciate its significance.
