What Members Thought

The Turn of the Screw is another classic I have been meaning to read for years. I didn't know much about it, but it has come up a lot lately in my Goodreads discussions and other books I have read. I was surprised to find out that it is a gothic horror story. Not really sure what I was expecting, but I guess I just had the stereotypical classic novel with people in old clothes with an antique setting on the cover. I know, I know - bad Matthew! Don't judge a book by its cover!

As far as ghost stories go, I prefer M.R. James to Henry. This really didn't do much for me.

Ahhh the ambiguity killed me, which is unfortunate because I usually like that in stories. I just don't feel like it was done well here, well at least not consistently, and at least not for my taste.

Written in 1898, it's the story of a young woman taking employment as a governess to two orphaned children, Miles and Flora in a remote estate mansion in Essex.

She becomes convinced that the grounds are haunted by two deceased employees, the previous governess Miss Jessel and the uncle's valet Quint. As the new governess battles unseen forces, the line between reality and imagination blurs, leaving you questioning what is real and what is not. I really do not understand the hype of this book. It dragged, it was confusing, nothing really seemed to happen. I felt no suspense for the governess or the seemingly creepy children. Even considering that the original story was released as serials, it did not feel as though there was tension from one chapter to another. What was the point?
