It's probably not wise to read a writer's last and therefore more mature work first and then go to his earliest breakout work. At least in this case, it proved the early work of The Sun Also Rises to be a disappointing read after breezing through The Old Man and the Sea. The foibles of a first work jumped out at me. Unclear delineation of speakers of dialogue, lack of depth in character thoughts, uneven flow between scenes. But give the man credit. He made himself a writer. It was through his eg ...more

Nice, Nice! A group of young expatriates from America and England travel from Paris to Spain to watch bull racing and bull fighting .. they are all addicted to meaningless enjoyment through constant drinking, traveling, shallow, unrepressed sexual affairs .. their vapid and fatuous lifestyles are exposed, brought to light .. representing a "lost generation" of youngsters after world war 1. ...more

I read it since it was recommended by Pat Conroy in My Reading Life. I found it to be very sad and much like the end of a bender where the momentary joy was quickly swallowed by the gaping hole of the soul. I can see the gravity it has for Conroy.
