God bless those who stay young at heart, and write children's literature so well that it makes adults feel like kids again. That's what Lewis Carroll did with this. I didn't really care for the film adaptations of this story as a kid and tried the Johnny Depp modern version and lasted about 10 minutes before I turned it off. What a difference reading it makes! I didn't like it as a child, but now as a proper adult with an appreciation for good classic literature I thought I'd give it another shot.

It's still very meh, and I think that that's because it was most definitely meant to be a bedtime story for a sleepy child... as opposed to an edgy grinder who's always on the hustle like myself. ...more

#18 on the McCrum list.... still going along in chronological order.
Debating between 4 and 5 stars, it jumps up into the 5 category as much because of the novelty of it.... Carroll's imagination carries the day. My second time reading it as an adult.... oddly (or maybe naturally) I couldn't "get it" enough to finish it as a child.

5= Truly cream of the crop. Amazing. In a wondrous realm of their own
4= Special and well written. Truly a good/maybe great book, but ...more
