This is an ugly in your face book. I was so upset reading it at the beginning, so much horrible stuff happening in this book. I kept reading and was captivated by it all about by the characters. There is also a beauty in this book that I haven't seen in a great deal of books. There was a mixture of emotions that came with this book, it even made me cry. Very very strong book. ...more

Truly a moving book about Celie, a poor child bride forced to marry a man to take care of his kids and his home and away from her sister Nettie of whom she fears is dead because Mister has kept all the letters. Shug Avery finds the letters and sneaks them to Celie and finds that her sister has become a missionary in Africa. Beautifully written and moving. This book really sets Alice Walker apart from the rest. Even better than the movie!
