This is my first Gaiman book. It's very interesting and kinds of different from books I've read and what I was expecting. I'm recommending this book to my friend, she loves reading about myths. She just might like this book.
I really like the main character Shadow. He reminds me of the character The Maxx. The stories are not the same at all but something about him that just reminds me of him. Maybe it's he's a big tough guy that has a calm side to him, even if he has been i ...more

Mythology/reality; dead/other forms of dead; men/Gods/things in between/things beyond/others not already covered. Really it's not all that confusing, just keep an open mind and Gaiman will spoon feed your brain other worldly nectar.
The set-up: The old Gods and the new in a land that is no good for any of them, America. Shadow, a man that has found that his American home is not all that hospitable to him either, is being thrust into the middle of a conflict between deities (the aforementioned ol ...more

Second reading 12/2016!
I will continue to hold this book on a very high pedestal. I learn something new about myself each time I read it. If there was ever a book that was etched on my soul...That changed my life...its this one-It's a bookworm's version of true love. And Sam Black Crow? She continues to be my first beloved character in literature. ...more

As a general rule, I don't like random Road Trip stories where you meet exciting people along the way. This is like borderline picaresque. Ugh. Me no likes these random yellow brick adventures!
On another side, I generally dislike anything to do with modernised or retold myths. I like my gods godly, and I mean, yes, it's all fiction, but I read myths before I read the Bible, so this whole djin taxi driver, prostitute spin makes me frown. I need Anthony Hopkins in body armour, not Matt Dillon's d ...more

This is a story about a faithless man learning about what lies beneath the reality he lives in and about where he came from. I really like how the idea of gods and beliefs is treated and developed in the book, and it makes for a great fantasy book. I was taken aback by the sheer amount of knowledge there is behind this book, and some characterisations are simply spot on.

I've read this book twice now, and I just absolutely love this take on gods and how they interact with our world. I've yet to find a book Neil Gaiman has written that I didn't like, so if you enjoy his other books, then you'll probably enjoy this one as well.
