The Stand Abridged: 5 Stars
The Stand Unabridged: 3.5 to 4 Stars
I hope that Goodreads lets both of my star ratings of this book go through as I already rated The Stand Abridged years ago, but in case it doesn’t, I am combining my review of the two into one.
The original Stand is one of my top three favorite books of all time (the other two being Brave New World and 1984 – I am a sucker for post-apocalyptic/dystopian). I don’t think The Stand is the best introduction a person could have to Stephen ...more

Review with comparison of '78 and '89 editions and info from Danse Macabre and "Night Surf"
Comments on the original short story: "Night Surf"
The first thing I did after finishing The Stand was picking up the short story "Night Surf," which is in the Night Shift collection.
I'm sure the King fans have already read it, but here's a quick summary: (view spoiler) ...more

M-O-O-N that spells "it was ok", laws yes!
There's a lot to like about this book. Like Tom Cullen the little scamp! But, there was also a lot of yawning. I'm familiar with King's writing. I know there are always going to be a lot of characters and I know that eventually all the connections will be made even if it doesn't initially make sense.
I thought this book was going to be more about a "super flu" and less about a battle of good vs. evil. That's why I was let down. I also think that I might a ...more

Super long book but very compelling story. You have a sense of accomplishment and relief upon finishing it. Would've been 5 stars if it were a more appropriate length.

I can't say anything more than this..this book is going to haunt me for quite a while..Haven't read a novel quite so scary yet assuring, full of anticipation, suspense yet predictable. There is no death for "the darkman"(evil)exists as long as there are 7 sins in the world..It all seems like an impending disaster only got postponed and not totally averted.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was long but it went by very fast. It's the 5th Stephen King book I've read and he's definately one of my favourite authors.
