My mother had a fit about this book which she said was sadistic and evil. When it came on TV she tried to prevent us from watching it. I did have to read it and identified with the one who had asthma whoever he was. I don't remember it now. I think boys can be especially sadistic to small animals and to each other. Mom used to go out and read the riot act to the neighborhood monsters who were killing horny toads in Fort Worth. I was very glad she was so brave and she put FEAR into them. ...more

While Lord of the Flies was a compelling story I was still happy to see it come to an end. Some people shelf this as middle grade or young adult based on the age of the characters. I think I will go with Stephen King's assessment in the introduction of this book and say this is a story about young boys for adults. I can't imagine a 12 year old picking up this book and not being appalled by the actions taken in the story. It's brutal and bloody and I'm not sure that I am convinced this is how a b ...more
