This was not the book for me. I know a lot of people give it praise and it is considered a classic, but I never got into it.

It rambled . . . it was repetitive . . . I got bored.

What was supposed to be a story about love seemed to be more about twisted obsession and I never found it endearing. None of the characters were all that great and I pretty much found myself feeling sorry for everyone.

I was thankful when I was done.

My first 5 star book of the year. Everything about this was just beautiful.

Going in I knew very little about this story other than its status as a modern classic. The title and cover led me to believe that it would be a weep-fest but what I got was something completely different. There was so much humour and joy in the mundane details of everyday life and love. When an author can make a married couple's argument about soap into something wonderful you know that they are special.

This book was a lot like TV juggernaut How I Met Your Mother. Only the TV show was more interesting! The two main characters meet as kids. Florentino's rebuffed. Fermina marries a rich doctor. He cheats on her. Florentino waits 52 years, has a lot of sex and goes back to Fermina and falls in love again. There could have been more meat to the plot. It was ok all in all.
