What Members Thought

This was not the book for me. I know a lot of people give it praise and it is considered a classic, but I never got into it.
It rambled . . . it was repetitive . . . I got bored.
What was supposed to be a story about love seemed to be more about twisted obsession and I never found it endearing. None of the characters were all that great and I pretty much found myself feeling sorry for everyone.
I was thankful when I was done.

My first 5 star book of the year. Everything about this was just beautiful.
Going in I knew very little about this story other than its status as a modern classic. The title and cover led me to believe that it would be a weep-fest but what I got was something completely different. There was so much humour and joy in the mundane details of everyday life and love. When an author can make a married couple's argument about soap into something wonderful you know that they are special.

What it is: Vices disguised as virtues. Dark, evocative prose glorifying despicable behaviors.
What it isn't: a love story
It's obsession to destruction ...more

This book was a lot like TV juggernaut How I Met Your Mother. Only the TV show was more interesting! The two main characters meet as kids. Florentino's rebuffed. Fermina marries a rich doctor. He cheats on her. Florentino waits 52 years, has a lot of sex and goes back to Fermina and falls in love again. There could have been more meat to the plot. It was ok all in all. Needed more characters.
