Are you an Alpha or a Beta? Well, actually in Brave New World, you don't really get that choice: you are either on or the other. Aldous Huxley's infamous dystopian England is a terrifying environment. Written in 1932 and thus a precursor to 1984 (written after the war in '48), its vision of the future is somewhat similar to what Philip K Dick would later write about in terms of biological predetermination (in PKD's case bio vs cyborg, here human alpha vs human beta) and it is a stark portrait. Another classic I don't know when I read -- this copy I found in the attic was a library discard, so it could have been anytime between 1964 and 1976. Aldous Huxley was one of my favorites at one time. ...more
