Meh. Kind of boring.
High-school-me might have liked it because faux-Roman Empire under attack from without and within where everyone has their own elemental spirit sounds like a fun thing. Too bad now-me read this after having read a lot of fantasy. Which I guess speaks to my biggest problem with this: it is YA and I really don't like YA fantasy.
There were no stakes, all the main characters were obviously going to live and overcome whatever speed bumps were set before them. Shoot, the main bad ...more

Nicely done, but I'm not inspired to jump right in to the rest of the series. The plotty bits felt a little predictable, even if the bits about the furies were pleasantly novel. The descriptions of the battle(s) were competently done, but went on and on and on and on (at least from my perspective).
