I enjoyed this. I would say that it absolutely maintains the Butcher style, and feels very similar in many ways to the first Codex Alera book.
Some characters immediately feel better drawn than others. I found Grimm and Benedict to be a tad bland and Bridget very quickly became my favourite character. I find her stiff upper lip in the face of extreme personal danger very cool.

Enjoyable first book in a steampunk (electro-punk?) universe. It's sort of age of sail except with electrically (fine, etherically) flying airships and magic. I'd be hard pressed to name my favorite character, but it's probably Rowl, the cat.
