What Members Thought
I am heartened by the number of positive, entertaining, representative teen books about queer kids that are out in the world now. Books that are without shame, and demonstrate what the thoughts and interests and realities of being a queer teen are today, which are very different from when I was a queer teen.

Simon's a junior in a suburban Atlanta high school, he's gay and he's in the closet. He's playing the only boy pickpocket in "Oliver." He's e-mailing another gay kid from his school, and he's falling in love with him, but he doesn't know who he is. Meanwhile, there's a kid blackmailing him -- the kid playing Fagin.

This was a clever well written M/M romance. The main character was smart and funny if not always wise and he works his way under your skin right away.

I've had this book sitting on my bookshelf since 2015, waiting to be read, but it wasn't until I saw the movie preview for the upcoming adaption that I was energized to read this novel. I shouldn't have waited to so long because this book is so beautiful. I really, really wish that something like this book existed when I was a young teenager! It's a sign of how far things have come that a novel like this can be read by a gay teenager who gets to see himself portrayed in a realistic and ordinary

Good enough to be devoured in one sitting. Avoids many cliches, but some of the "hey, kids, try to understand your parents a bit better" got preachy real fast (such is the nature of so much YA). A tad on the unrealistic side in places, but not so much that it ruined the book.
Overall, a solid read. Recommended, especially if you're into LGBTQ YA. ...more
