Well-written, intelligent, but a little too precious for its own good. "Cloud Atlas" is like 6 novellas loosely bound together. Each is written in a different literary style, which helped to evoke the flavor of a different era but also made it come across as a tad disjointed and, frankly, overly clever. My favorite part was the dystopian "An Orison of Sonmi-451", which I would have loved to see stand alone as its own work.

But for an irrational fear that it would jinx him, I'd be tempted to say, "Is there nothing Mitchell can't do?" This sprawling, experimental, genre-defying offering demonstrates that Mitchell almost always succeeds, and even when he doesn't, something worthwhile usually arises just from the attempt.

LOVED it. Not all the stories are created equal, but the best ones alleviate any weaknesses. I won't even try to make an assessment because whatever I write is going to feel incomplete and trite compared to the way I feel about the book. It's a must read, and I would love love love to have a conversation with David Mitchell even just about the weather.
