Mitchell's character Timothy Cavendish remarks "As if Art is the What, not the How!" Cloud Atlas is all about the How. Fascinating concept, memorable characters, well written (except for the sixth and central story, which was a bit of a slog). Definitely the first historical fiction-future dystopian-contemporary thriller I've ever read.

this book vexed me. i was enthralled initially but the clumsy connections made from section to section just became duller and duller -- and omg, comet birthmarks. on the one hand, i wholly admire mitchell's genius for invention -- he is a tremendously clever writer. on the other hand, why? so what? who cares? to be fair, i skimmed the last half so i'm sure i'm missing the big what's-it-all-about.

It took me a long time to get into this book and to figure out how it was operating, but once I did I enjoyed it. The subtle connections between each section were a delight. Throughout, I thought Mitchell did an excellent job of illustrating oppression and the drive to power, which is so central to this book. The unusual form worked, way better than I thought it would. Don't give up if you're having a hard time with one of the narrators - the next one will probably suit you better.
