Not sure what I missed with this one. A Single Man details a day in the life of George, a gay man living in the suburbs of Southern California, as he adjusts to the death of his partner Jim. While Isherwood incorporates phrases of beauty every now and then and through George ruminates on deep topics, the story as a whole failed to move me. Will probably reread at a later at a later date and/or watch the movie.

As a gay man in the 1960s and as a Brit living in America, George, the book's main character, possesses a unique "insider-outsider" status that colors his frequent social observations. His detached, all-too-accurate insights into those around him make him come across as more anthropologist than literature professor. The only real failing I found was that George's grief over his recently deceased partner seemed to be treated at with a distracted sort of tenderness at best. ...more
