I admit it. I was surprised by Middlesex.
Back when I got stuck in the doldrums of The Shipping News, finally tossing it overboard, then wasted my time with The Stone Diaries a year later, I subconsciously vowed to ignore the Pulitzer Prize forever. I finally finished it. Whew! It didn't take me so long because it was unpleasant. Quite the contrary: I read it slowly and carefully, savoring each delicious word. It took so long because I wanted to read it when I would have time to devote a big chunk of time to it without interruption. I actually read it in only 3 sittings.
Although it was hard to put down, it was easy to not come back to as it takes a lot of mental energy to read. That sounds wrong, though... It's not convoluted or difficult, ...more

I read Middlesex for the first time in 2006 while in desperate need of an English Language novel while I was in Florence, Italy. I picked this one up on a whim and was so engrossed by the story that I was walking through the streets with my nose in the book. I have held it in my memory of one of the best books I've read. I've always wanted to discuss it, but never had the opportunity and hoped that the book would hold up to a close rereading.
