Essentially this is the tale of a family with the emphasis on one young member whose unusual adolescence is chronicled against the backdrop of America's own turbulent growth years. While neither the child nor the nation was prepared for the surprises and changes in store, both endured and perhaps were stronger because of them.

I just did not enjoy this. It was long, too. I probably got through a good deal of it believing it would have to get better, and then finished it b/c I get to be like a dog with a bone. I like to finish books unless I literally hate them. Don't 'member for sure, but think part of problem was Eugenides did not help me to feel anything for the protagonist. And I'm pretty easy to get emotionally involved.

This is an AMAZING read. You know these people and yet you've never met anyone quite like them before. So real that if the bell rang and one of these characters was standing there, I wouldn't blink. It will teach you things. It will make you wonder and research, and learn. Not a sad book, overall, but a realistic one, and it's realism made me cry, the same as life does.
