A fun mystery/thriller set among the "New Christians" or secret Jews of early sixteenth-century Lisbon. The prose is a little purple, but that meshes well with the Kabbala imagery often invoked by the narrator. It doesn't hurt that there's some homoerotic imagery as well, though the narrator is ostensibly straight. (This author has published other work about men who have sex with men.) I enjoyed it. ...more
