What Members Thought

About thirty-two years ago, along a remote southern stretch known as the "forgotten coast," an Event occurred that began to transform the landscape and simultaneously caused an invisible border or wall to appear.
The women seem to recall little about Area X. They say almost nothing about what they saw and what happened to them during their expedition. John Rodriquez/Control is tasked with finding the facts.

An unsettling study of the ineffable. The indescribable. A slowly constricting knot. Our human edifices are evanescent. Or as I say in my novel
A Greater Monster
, "A home is paper thin."
Nature is a harsh taskmistress. Nature is implacable. We have been playing with fire for a long time now. Humans think they own the land. The clouds. The air. The water. We do not own it. It owns us. We've been borrowing it without paying back the principal. And it's going to come due soon.

Middle volume, the eye of the storm? I think VanderMeer wisely steps back a bit and rebuilds, no longer in the maelstrom of strangeness in Annihilation, but in the mundane world, reframing the narrative as he goes. It works. I'm still finding this series as gripping as anything I've read in a while, without tipping its hand too far and becoming predictable, mawkish, juvenile, or any of the other things that usually push me out of horror narratives at some point. There's a very difficult balancin

It was as if a different person put the key in the ignition and drove away from everything that was familiar.
Well, shit. It is another Sunday and my sinus issues haven't been resolved, neither have my questions concerning the first volume of this inspired arc. The problem is, I'm afraid, I'm not sure any answers would suffice at this point. Authority is readily described by critics and fans as a spy novel. My experience in the genre may be limited, but this isn't cloak-and-dagger. Authority is m ...more

Better than the first installment.Let us be honest, most of the time we are disappointed with the "next in series". All I can say that this was more creepy and intense. And nope still no answers. And I am completely ok with that.It is a brilliant continuation of the first book. Could not put it down. And really I can't say anything more about the story. To say anything would be to:
1.Sound like a crazy person.
2.Sound like a crazy person.

3.5 stars

I really enjoyed the first book, so I'm sad to have to give this one a negative review. But Authority just did not live up to the promise of the first book in the series. By the 50% mark, I found myself impatient to get it all over with.
In the first book, the extreme tension between the characters was believable given the situation. In this book, it seems contrived. Characters, relationships, and plot lines are introduced and then stagnate for 150 pages.

After an exciting and disturbing first book, this one was more of a slog to get through. I admired the author's ability to change the tone so dramatically, bringing in elements of mystery, espionage, and conspiracy fiction. The main idea seemed to be that the weirdness of Area X had somehow infected the outside bureaucracy designed to control and study it. The characters all have different neuroses, allegiances, and theories about Area X that prevent them from working with each other rationally

3.5 stars, really. I think these are books that really need to be read back to back - I did myself a bit of a disservice by waiting a year to read this one. I could broadly remember the first book but I could tell that there were references and allusions (breaches, if you will) that I wasn't fully getting.
It's an odd book and is structurally all over the place but I really appreciate Jeff VanderMeer's writing, his knack with the uncanny. There was a phrase about windows "gathering the grey from ...more
