Scorpions, come out and plaaaay!

I don't recall much about The Warriors (saw it a long time ago and was probably drinking at the time) but that screenshot could easily be a scene from Dhalgren: The matching vests! The hairstyles! The unbridled homoeroticism!

Philip K. Dick famously threw this book at the wall after reading 361 pages. I read about 300 and couldn't stand another page, so Phil is one up on me. Don't get me wrong, I seriously love me some goddamn meta- speculative fiction/what-have-you. I consider Pynchon to be the pinnacle of American literature and "Gravity's Rainbow" (to which Dhalgren is often compared) one of the great American novels. This book is nothing like that. Truly a wild trip of a novel that I may not have finished had I not read it for a book club. Challenging in a variety of ways but well worth it with an open mind. Helped recalibrate my idea of what books could and should do, and for that I am grateful. In what is often called a plotless novel (I disagree), I was surprised how easily I still found many narrative threads that ended in a satisfying manner (for my tastes), even if they didn't exactly resolve.
