I became interested in this novel after it was frequently referenced in The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield, which is in my top ten novels I've ever read. Loving the Gothic tradition of Du Marier and Bronte, I assumed I would enjoy this book. I was not disappointed, except in the lengthiness of it. Like most Victorian novels, it is at least 80,000 words too long, full of cliches and gender tropes, and so overly dramatic in sections that it is almost impossible to resist an eye-roll. So, yea
