Les Miserables is Hugo's chef-d'oeuvre. He manages to masterly amalgamate the Romanticism and elements of realism, to write a humanistic novel for all human beings. Protagonists are the miserables; the wretched of the earth if you like, whose ups-and-downs are followed throughout the story. The first time I read this book, I was in the 5th grade. I remember it being really difficult, but I was so determined to read it. It was the next best thing I could think of sicne my parents didn't let me go see the musical when it came through. I do think it's interesting the little facts the musical left out. For example Gavroche being Eponine's little brother.
