Thinking about this book a few months on I had to increase it to five stars. When you can’t stop thinking about a book it must be something special. It took me a little while to get into but I sat downstairs under lamplight well after midnight with tears streaming down my face at the end.
Heartbreaking, courageous, unforgettable

I’ll admit this is my first foray into French historical fiction. And, since I disagreed with typical assessments of Parisians I admit I was drawn to this book for its love/hate reviews.

I was not disappointed. In. Any. Way.
Now that I have truly made TIME to read I am more satisfied. And the benevolent universe, one rocking the cradle in this novel, seems to put the right books in my hands. And, if you find that cliche, consider this: found at my public library. One dollar.

This story tore my heart apart and I have tears in my eyes as I write this. Women navigate the perils of war differently than men. This story of two French sisters surviving the Nazi occupation of France at the height of WWII is breathtakingly heartbreaking.
