I ended up liking the Martian in whole at the end more than I enjoyed it as I read it, if that makes any sense. I was very impressed with the authors comprehensive knowledge of Mars, space missions and technology, but at times those sections became too dense. He was able to develop strong, likable characters even though relationships weren't the main focus. I read the final third of the book in a few hours, it was very engrossing. Worth a read before it comes out as a blockbuster.

I loved everything about this book! The subject matter, the pace, the technical details, the drama... it was all great. No criticisms. This is science plus disaster preparedness all rolled into one. How can you go wrong with that combination? This is the first wholly entertaining book I've read that goes beyond scratching the surface of physics, chemistry, and botany.
I've heard whispers of this being turned into a movie, and I'm so very glad I read this before seeing it in the theaters. The main ...more

I loved the concept of this book, which is sort of like Castaway on Mars. It was nerve-wracking to read, as Mark Watney, an astronaut stranded on Mars, faces more and more danger and bad luck as he tries to stay alive until he can be rescued. Much of the book is written as his space journal, so that makes it possible for the reader not to know for sure if he makes it.
Mark is both a botanist and an engineer, so he has a lot of skills. And the author goes into extensive detail, which was too much ...more

I'm really conflicted on how I feel about this novel, so I probably won't rate it. Review to come later.

I actually started this book in July 2015! Took a year and a half to finish.
I really liked the beginning, then it got a bit too much in the middle (boring!) - when he was all alone on Mars & it was super technical.
Picked it up again and flew through the end. I think I was just motivated to finish it, and it actually wasn't as boring as I remember it. ...more

This is more like 2.5 stars. I really wanted to love it, it started out super fun and engaging, but it started to get very, very old about half-way through. I'm just wasn't nerd enough for 350+pages of Macgyver on Mars.
