I have to say I liked this book a lot more than The Hunger Games, and I will most likely read the next in the series. Unlike the dominant Capital in Hunger Games, this book features Chicago with Lake Michigan reduced to a marsh and four factions living in what at first seems to be a pretty harmonious society. It's taken me a while to come to some conclusion about my rating of Divergent.
The story itself is captivating enough, and I really liked the idea of separating people into factions based on beliefs/viewpoints. While I do find that categorizing people into these factions is pretty much fighting what makes us human, it still was a cool idea to think about.
Aside from that, I wasn't entirely impressed. I'm a big sucker for an author that world-builds well, and I don't think that happened here. I d ...more

Great book, very reminiscent of The Hunger Games, but a little less isolated, if that makes any sense. The relationship between the hero and the heroine makes sense, which doesn't always happen in YA.

Definitely wants to be The Hunger Games, and I wanted that, too, but it didn't live up. I liked the characters somewhat, but the pacing was off and I just didn't buy in entirely. I'm not sure if I'll read the others or not.
