Detective Jane Rizzoli and ME Maura Isles are called to a crime scene in Chinatown where a severed hand was found in an alley that eventually led to a female corpse on the rooftop of one of the adjacent buildings. Clues are scarce but eventually lead them to a 19-year old case where five people died in an apparent murder-suicide at a restaurant there in Chinatown. Also connected are two teenaged girls who are tied to the victims and disappeared shortly before and after the massacre.

First 1/3 is slow and lacks direction, however, the book becomes more enjoyable once the action heats up and things begin to make sense.
The character development is virtually non-existent and what little there is in the form of Maura's conflict with the men-in-blue and the progression of Angela Rizzoli's relationship with Vince Korsak feels tacked on.

Detective Jane Rizzoli investigates the murder of an unidentified woman on a tenement rooftop in Chinatown. Her hand was severed and her throat sliced open. With no clues as to her identity, Rizzoli search leads her to a nineteen year old murder-suicide in a Chinatown restaurant, and two cases involving missing teenage girls. Soon a martial arts instructor with ties to the old cases is involved, along with a retired cop, an Irish mobster, and lots of Chinese folklore.

Perhaps 3.5 stars, rounding up.
It was interesting to note which character spoke in the first person in this book. The crime scene is in the Chinatown section of Boston. Chinese mythology figures into the story. I almost never like books, no matter the genre, that have tidbits of fairy tales or mythology as chapter headers, etc., and although I see the necessity for such in this book, I was not as appreciative of the device as many other reviewers were.

After giving evidence against a cop Maura is no longer considered a friend of the men and women in Blue. This puts a strain on her relationship with Rizzoli. Rizzoli and Frost are on a case in Chinatown that is linked to a murder suicide and kidnappings 19 years ago. I liked this novel, but it lacked the grittiness of the first books.
