Having read a few of the later Harry Bosch novels it was time I started at the beginning of the series and read them in order. I am very glad I read this one! Okay so Harry is a bit of a cliche but he is also very likeable in a strange sort of way. He reminds me a little of Jack Reacher with his war damaged personality and his total disregard for authority. I enjoyed the twists and turns of the story and especially liked the procedural details and seeing the way a case develops as various clues

Hollywood, California Detective Harry Bosch is called to the scene of a dead body and discovers he knows the identity of the victim and pursues the case further. Bosch finds himself joined with an FBI agent, Eleanor Wish, and pitted against enemies in his own department as he tries to solve the case. Bosch is the classic competent detective bucking the political system within the Beverly Hills police department. He's trying to solve a crime and the department is more interested in the optics of

Harry Bosch is a homicide detective whose star within the ranks of the LAPD has risen and fallen. He's a prickly loner but he's smart and tenacious and that helps him to be very, very good at his job. And when a face from some of the darker moments of his past shows up dead on his watch, he's like a hound on the scent.
This was a solid book with an interesting case and believable characters. Top among them is Harry himself who, despite his rough edges, has managed to avoid succumbing to ...more

I enjoyed this first Harry Bosch novel very much. It was a well-plotted story with lots of twists and turns that keeps you guessing until the end. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Harry Bosch, whose mother was fascinated by the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch, and therefore called her son after him, is an LAPD detective who prefers to work on his own and to trust his instincts. Recognising the body that is discovered in a drainage tunnel off Mulholland Drive as that of one of his colleague tunnel rats from Vietnam days, he pursues this as a case of murder, rather than the drug overdose suicide that everyone else wishes it to be. “The Black Echo” of the title reflects the ex

The dead man in the pipe was Billy Meadows. He wasn't a junkie who overdosed as everyone was supposed to believe. He was a former Vietnam vet who had been murdered. LAPD Homicide Detective Harry Bosch recognized him and vowed to track down his killer. Joining with FBI Agent Eleanor Wise, Harry uncovers information about a bank robbery, drugs and murder. Now if he can keep Internal Affairs off his back, he just might be able to find Billy's killer.

Liked it. I thought it was slow in the beginning, but once I got into the story couldn't put it down. It's a bit light on romance, but I will continue with the series.

A good book with good characters. There was a small amount of romance, but it wasn't over done or become the main topic. I have read too many mystery/suspense/thriller books that have done that. The story line was put together well and although I had an idea who was involved, I was shocked by a surprise ending. I like that!

"LAPD detective Hieronymous (aka Harry) Bosch is a loner and a nighthawk. Called out on a routine drug overdose case, Bosch soon realises that the victim found lying in the Mullholland Dam drainpipe is no accident case. Billy Meadows was a fellow 'tunnel rat' in Vietnam and Harry swears to bring the killer to justice." (From Amazon)
Harry Bosch is a great character and I really enjoyed this suspense novel. I will definitely be reading more on the series. ...more
