At the beginning, I thought it was going to be a strange book, since Death is the narrator. But after a couple of chapters, I adjusted to the writing style, which is a little on the "lyrical" side, which I normally don't care for. The story is excellent and kept me reading. I liked the fact that Death is portrayed as a sympathetic character who delivers souls from suffering and carries them gently to...where? It never really says.

It took me over a year to read this but it. was worth every minute. As I finished reading this on the bus today, I was crying from how much it touched me, so I reccomend it to every single person on this planet who hasn't read it yet.

An "adopted" daughter comes of age on one of the poorest streets in small town Germany during WWII. Her life story is told by a collector of souls. This collector read the book written by the young girl as she was coming of age. Excellent read from someone that tends to avoid the fantasy genre.
