What Members Thought
This book took a bit of getting used to... call it a learning curve. Between the multiple timelines, the multiple meanings of self the narrator has, the prevalence of the female generic pronouns, and, of course, the various cultures and races of people in the story, it's a lot to handle and the author does not ease the reader in.
But honestly, this book was pretty fantastic and I highly recommend it. I will definitely be reading the next in the series, though not immediately. ...more

I can see why people raved about this and deeply enjoyed it. I enjoyed the myriad of ideas presented - the assumptions of gender, the dynamics of empire building, the construction of personhood, ideas about class and relationships.
I can see how these things - especially the gender thing - would send your average specfic reader into rapturous applause, but as someone who has read considerably within gender studies and who holds politics of empires as a particular academic interest, it wasn't new ...more
