I'd like to rate this higher, but I just found the sub story rather boring. I loved the story revolving around the "potion" I thought that was fantastic.

I just couldn't get into the story of when he went back in time. It dragged for me and I didn't really find any of it interesting.

The time travel, especially towards the end was really compelling.

Its a different sort of book for me - I generally don't go for time travel books, and I haven't read du Maurier in years so I wanted to give it a go

Vow, each Maurier's book is able to surprise us even more!!!

Dick Young is lent a house in Cornwall by his friend Professor Magnus Lane. During his stay he agrees to serve as a guinea pig for a new drug that Magnus has discovered in his biochemical researches. The effect of this drug is to transport Dick from the house at Kilmarth to the Cornwall of the 14th century.

I read Daphne Du Maurier's My Cousin Rachel and loved it, so I picked up both Rebecca and The House on the Strand right away. I love this one too! And honestly, the whole time travel aspect was not something I was looking forward to as I am not a fan of science fiction. However this book is intricate and complex and unique. It is partly historical fiction, partly mystery. The characters inspire empathy; they are sometimes likable and often detestable. They are flawed and very real.
