The Professor is Charlotte Brontë’s first novel, and not surprisingly, not her best. There are glimpses of the genius that would become Charlotte Bronte in this novel, but it has not emerged yet, as it would with her epic, Jane Eyre. As in Villette, she has set her tale abroad, this time in Belgium, and she deals with the life of a man, William Crimsworth, who finds himself teaching English at a school for young women. Another engaging read from this year's Bronte readathon, although not one of my favourites.
I think it's fair to say that in this novel we witness Charlotte flexing her fledgling writer's muscles.
It's generally accepted that The Professor is the precursor to Villette and draws from Charlotte's own experience of working in Brussels.
The story held enough interest to keep me engaged but I didn't have much real sympathy with any of the characters, except Mlle Henri.

I enjoyed reading "The Professor", but it was missing something. I felt the characters were rushed and the emotions weren't conveyed well. While reading the professor I kept on seeing moments of the characters speaking another language without any translation for the reader to understand the words being written. I felt like if the author wanted to add words of another language to the story then they should have added translation or wrote in a way for the reader to understand what was happening.
