Though Le Guin's first published novel, and somewhat early in the New Wave, the hallmarks of Le Guin's style are surprisingly well-developed in Rocannon's World: the blending of SF and fantasy, the basic framework of the Hainish stories, the emphasis on character relationships and themes of loss and tragedy.

Really enjoyable adventure story. I think it was her first published nove(1966)l . I've been trying to hunt her novels down for the last couple of years. This was the second one I've read. Her novels seem to be out of print, and not available in my library system. I grabbed two paperbacks at a used bookstore this week. I was pleased to get one of her tales with the 'flying cats,' since I'd read an essay about how she'd hit on the idea of the flying cats.

I like this series. It's not a typical science fiction. It's slightly dark, depressing and other-worldly with fantasy overtones.
