What Members Thought
This is Dickens fifth novel and it was his first attempt to write an historical novel and was inspired by the Walter Scott's novels.
In the first chapters, Dickens describes the Maypole and introduces the main characters: Gabriel Varden with his wife and his daughter, Simon Tappertit, John and Joe Willet, Solomon Daisy, the Haredales, the Rudges and a mysterious stranger.

Very well written, but extremely disturbing. Read at the same time as Zola's Germinal. Both deal with riots and unrest.

Certainly not among my favorites among Dickens' novels, but this is probably also due to the fact that I was unaware of the part of the story that is the background to the events narrated.
Certamente non tra i miei preferiti tra i romanzi di Dickens, ma probabilmente questo é anche dovuto al fatto che ignoravo la parte di storia che fa da sfondo agli eventi narrati. ...more
