Very few works of science fiction truly live up to the potential of the genre. It might be because all science fiction is, to an extent, a thought experiment, a “what-if.” But, it is, as Ursula Le Guin points out, a twist on the present. Even when the book is ostensibly about the future or another world, it is still inevitably tied to our own reality. This is, perhaps, why so many works of science fiction are merely retelling of realist stories in a fantastical setting.

"Tired of the same old sci fi?  Has your vision of the future and psychic powers just been ho-hum?  Perk up your view of reality with a little Ubik! Your husband will say, Christ, Sally I used to think your ranking of science fiction novels was only so-so.  But now, wow!  Warning:  read only as directed.  Avoid prolonged use."

What a trippy read! I read it because it was referenced in Black Mirror Bandersnatch (remember the scene??) and I've read a couple PKD books. Loved it, couldn't put it down

Third reread for this one. I still love him, but by god PKD needed an editor. There are a lot of jumps in logic and exposition. On the other hand, this guy's mind was pure magic. This is why I feel like his short stories are the best bang for your buck. ...more
