I have to admit that I found this book totally boring, mostly because I already know what was going to happen in Germany in 1933 and because the main characters were as interesting as a dish of salad. Dodd's family were not only boring but, even if something interesting happened to them, the way the author told it, made the story hard to survive, that's why I struggled to get to an end of the book.

Whittling down the TBR pile in 2016 and this one came up. A 3 star and no higher partly because I don't know how fond I am of the blurred line between fiction and non.... had a similar gripe with Things They Carried which was read just before this one. Still a really good book and one to recomend.

5= Truly cream of the crop. Amazing. In a wondrous realm of their own
4= Special and well written. Truly a good/maybe great book, but not a rare 5 star wonder.
