Daphne du Maurier always surprises me with her intriguing, beautiful prose, smart plot-lines, and gothic mood.

Daphne du Maurier is my new literary heroine! After I fell in love with Rebecca and with her having wandered through the halls of Manderly, I discovered how big was the difference between her "Birds" and those of Hitchcock, who, let me tell you, loses in comparison. There are other stories including the first and longest "Monte Veritá" that left me with a subtle and persistent anxiety also due to the various twists in some of the plots.

In high school I had to write a horror story. I had what I thought was a good story but couldn't think of a way to end it. So I had the heroine just wake up find it was all a dream. Most of these stories were like that except for the dream part. They just ended--like someone came along with a cleaver and chopped off the ending.

I was planning on a one star rating until I got to the The Old Man. That one blew me away. The ending was awesome so I'm moving my rating up to 2 stars.
