I am so sorry to say I was not impressed by this novel. I wanted to like it, I expected to. After all, one of my favorite books of all time is about a wizard, and a world that doesn’t exist but is well constructed is another appealing element...I was a fan of Middle Earth before it became a blockbuster movie. Try as I might, though, I could not muster a single drop of concern or caring for Ged or anyone else in his world.

This read like an allegory to me, with the third person perspective not hel

I can see how other fantasy books were influenced and influenced this book. The setting and character Ged gave off strong Eragon vibes for me, which was okay. I didn't particularly care for Eragon (I don't think I finished it), so I can't say that was much of a plus. It actually felt a little drab to me. I like my fantasy lands a little more lively.
But then...dragons. I do love my dragons. So yay for that. Still, they didn't play a large role, and that was disappointing. I think the lesson, tho

When I grabbed this at the used book shop, the sales person told me that he believed it to be one of her best. Well . . . It was a fun read for a sunny afternoon with nothing else happening. I've now read three of her novels, and most of her essays. They are all good. A few of the essays are great. This is a well written fantasy/adventure tale about wizards and magic and evil in the world. I think the bible summed it all up nicely as "Pride goeth before a fall." A young wizard in training (not n ...more

When I picked up Ursula K. Le Guin's young adult novel The Wizard of Earthsea, I was intrigued immediately by the plot. This first book in the Earthsea chronicle centers on a young and egotistical boy, Sparrowhawk, with the wizardly powers of a Mage, who learns that in order to unlock the secrets of the world, one must learn the true name of a thing.

Le Guin's novel posits that every being has a true name and if one can learn it then one can understand the true nature of life and death.

This Story Was Meant For You Too

A series of coincidences brought this book to me the day the author died.  After I heard the sad news, I started reading.

I quickly found myself immersed in a different kind of fantasy story.  The people were different, the magic was different, and the "battle" was different.  When I finished and then read the author's Afterword, I realized why this was done and why it was important.

I feel like I was meant to read this story.  I know this sounds corny, but it's as

I went into this book feeling vindictive and defensive because my English 12 professor remarked that she liked it better than Harry Potter. But instead of feeling satisfied with myself because it was a complete shit, I found that it wasn't, and that I actually was falling in love with another boy wizard. I was so, so wrong. ...more
