Dodie Smith gave us 101 Dalmations. Who knew? I had only ever heard of her in reference to this work, but I’m guessing Cruella DeVille was her masterpiece character.

Anyway, this review is about I Capture the Castle, written in the form of seventeen year old Cassandra Mortmain’s diary. It is cute, light-hearted and completely predictable. In this boy meets girl story, the eccentric, dysfunctional and impoverished Mortmain family meets their landlords, the nice, wealthy, erudite Cotton family. More to the point, two poor young women meet two wealthy young men. The story was a pleasant read with no villains but with one annoying father (James Mortmain) whom everyone catered to and excused his selfish behavior in the hopes that this one book phenomenon would break through his writer's block and write another blockbuster bestseller.
