Cue the Twilight Zone music, please. This book is totally eerie without even needing a hint of anything supernatural, and as tense as the first time you watched Halloween. (Oh come on, I know the movie is silly, but really didn’t you jump the first time you watched?)

In Merricat, Shirley Jackson has created the most unreliable of narrators. I was constantly trying to look beyond the version she was giving me to see if I could make out the real picture. Before Jackson makes it clear that Merricat

THAT ENDING, THO! Awesome. This book raises the question of: how much of a person's 'scary reputation' is truly earned, and how much is based on word-of-mouth? Truth or rumors-become-truth? Very cool story with a lot to think about. Loved it. Glad that I FINALLY read it! --Jen from Quebec :0) ...more

English Review Below.

The Lottery

Whoa. What the heck just happened here? This was, by far, one of the most entertaining books I've read in the last few years. I love books that, in a good way, challenge you to figure out what the hell is going on. (of course, if they're so obtuse you don't have a chance, they are no good at all.) This novella hits the right spot. I also couldn't help thinking of the Grey Gardens siblings while reading this. I don't want to say much of anything about the actual story - because its best if you go ...more

Weird is only skin deep.

This book possesses an eerie and eccentric quality that easily draws the reader in. The writer created an atmosphere I would describe as whimsically disturbing! However, the plot lacked more of the quirky flare that I was looking for and did not quite strike home. After the pseudo-mystery behind the family's death was revealed, the story hit a pothole and flatlined. This was like a disappointing broth with a smell that's deliciously inviting and a taste that's dull as dis

This was an entertaining and beguiling read. I was completely consumed by Merricat's point of view and completely on her side against everyone. An unusual read. ...more
