A slight but powerful work. Douglass, with supreme erudition, detail, and conviction, outlines a bleak era in America’s history through the lens of his own experiences. The work does lack; Douglass’s voice while angry and for the most part righteous can be inconsistent in its views (especially in the admittedly tricky navigation between being a God fearing Christian in a nation of God fearing Christian slaveholders) and a bit self aggrandizing in his role as a ‘speaker of his people’.
