The book is set in the fictional town of Sarszeg, modeled after the author's hometown. We follow the characters through the small, gray world which they inhabit. Skylark is the ugly, unaccomplished daughter who anchors the tedium of the family's joyless lives. This is a quiet, heartbreaking book. ...more
