Even if this a huge book, one never gets tired of the splendid narrative built by Rebecca West all along this marvelous book.

I learned much but reading this was a painfully slow read for me.

I took away 2 stars because West really needed an editor. In the book, West explains to a university student that she wrote to learn about her subject. While West could describe & report well when she stayed on subject, there were far too many rambling digressions and opinionated descriptions.

I, also, unfortunately had a kindle version which was likely produced by optical scan- every special character, dot, squiggle and quote mark ...more
